GREATER LONDON PUB OF THE YEAR 2003

Wenlock Arms
The SPBW has voted the Wenlock Arms as London's best pub.

Steve and Will of the Wenlock Arms were presented with a special award on Monday 27 January at 8 o'clock p.m. It was a pleasure to see so many SPBW members at the venue. We thank the hosts, for supplying some grub, accepting a presentation of two plaques and laying on some excellent beers. Pictures are shown below, the Hackney Gazette covered the full story. This event marked the start of the celebrations for the fortieth anniversary of the SPBW.

Chris Callow and Steve Barnes

The presentation of the Greater London Pub of the Year for 2003 to the Wenlock Arms, Hoxton. Around 20 members plus a good collection of the pub's regulars, were on hand to see Chris Callow present this coveted award to Steve Barnes, one of the co-guvors. (Will Williams, the other, was foiled by the tube strike that evening).

Thwaites bitter was a special offer at £1.20 alongside the rest of the usual superb selection. Liberal helpings of locally baked pizza were handed around and the usual good time was had. There was a report and photo of the present in the Hackney Gazette (What's Brewing and London Drinker also carried a short report). Celebrating the award

The Wenlock Arms is a genuine traditional back street local which was rescued from obscurity when beer lovers Steve and Will took it over in 1994. Nowadays it serves up to 8 hand pumped beers (as well as a 'real' cider) and it is one of the few London pubs where you can always get a pint of mild. It attracts a clientele of regulars from the neighbourhood and beer lovers from further afield. They are entertained by live jazz on Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday lunchtime as well as by a quiz on Thursday nights. More information about the pub can be found on its website: www.wenlock-arms.co.uk

Wenlock Road is just off City Road to the north. Nearest tube is Old Street - leave station by exit 1. Walk past Moorfields Eye Hospital, look out for Shepherdess Walk (and the famous Eagle pub of the song) and take next turning Windsor Terrace (opposite the Star); Wenlock Road is a continuation.
