John Dearing

Branch Liaison Officer

This year marks 50 years of regular (and legal) beer-drinking for me and 42 years since I joined the Campaign for Real Ale - on New Year's Day! I was a founder member of two branches, Slough Windsor and Maidenhead and Reading and Mid-Berks and eventually served on the committees and became Chairman of both (though not at the same time).

I was a bit later coming to SPBW, joining around 15 years ago and became involved with the late Peter Smith in re-establishing the Common Branch in Reading. I suggested the name change to Common and Aldbrickham (good old C&A!) - an allusion to the name Thomas Hardy gave to Reading in the Wessex Novels. After Pete's death I became co-ordinator of the branch - can't really call myself Chairman as we don't generally have formal meetings.

I am also a local historian and my output includes "Reading Pubs" (History Press, 2009) and a dictionary of Berkshire Breweries.
